First Congregational Church of Dundee welcomes a diversity of beliefs, experiences, and expressions of faith. We strive to be an open, non-judgmental community in which to grow in love of God and love of our neighbors. We believe Christianity is far more a way of life than a system of belief. All are welcome here to worship, learn, serve, and make a difference in the lives of others.
We are, of course, grounded in thousands of years of faith tradition, and share the foundational beliefs that have inspired Christian churches since the beginning. At the same time, we are open to truth in this time, humble about what we can’t know, willing to embrace mystery, and free to respond to where God might still be leading us.
We are a congregation that resists labels, especially when most of the labels we give one another these days are cumbersome and unhelpful. While grounded in the traditions of congregationalism, we are made up overwhelmingly of “ex-something’s” – we’ve been Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, non-religious and much more.
As a member congregation of the United Church of Christ (www.ucc.org), we stand in a long, faithful tradition of churches passionate about inclusion and justice. We accept as a continuing challenge the five historic commitments of our denomination: that we would be a united and uniting church, multiracial and multicultural, accessible to all, open and affirming, and that we would seek peace with justice.
Formally, our congregation’s official statements on faith, practice and covenant are as follows:
“This church recognizes the Bible as the sufficient rule of faith and practice and holds that living in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ is the true test of faith. Each member shall have the undisturbed right to follow the Word of God according to the dictates of his/her own conscience, under the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. The following Statement of Faith therefore, is not a test, but an expression of the spirit in which our church interprets the Word of God.”
“We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, goodness and love; and Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord and Savior, who for us and for our salvation lived and died and rose again and lives evermore; and in the Holy Spirit, who takes of the things of Christ and reveals them to us, renewing, comforting and inspiring the souls of all.”
“We are united in striving to know the will of God as taught in the Holy Scriptures and in our purpose to walk in the ways of the Lord, made known or to be made known to us. We hold it to be the mission of the Church of Christ to proclaim the Gospel to all humankind, exalting the worship of the one true God and laboring for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace and the realization of human brotherhood and sisterhood. Depending, as did our fathers and mothers, upon the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, we work and pray for the transformation of the world into the kingdom of God; and we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness and the life everlasting.”
Of course, we know there are many more questions you might have about who we are, what we believe and how we organize ourselves. We would welcome further conversation; please find our contact information below.
